The 2006 and 2007 vintages in Tuscany are not identical. Both are great vintages and both produced some spectacular wines. We have been waiting some time to be able to make today’s offer. If you consider Brunello di Montalcino to be the best wine produced in Tuscany, today we are featuring the best wines in Montalcino.
I have called Vincenzo Abbruzzese the hardest working person in Tuscany and what he has done at Valdicava proves it. This is a man who keeps yields ridiculously low and takes meticulous care of each individual grape. Today Valdicava is recognized as one of the truly great wineries in the world.
Made from young vines on the estate, the 2009 Valdicava Rosso di Montalcino is supposed to be the “entry level” wine. However, this Rosso has more richness, complexity and depth and could actually use a couple of years before drinking. The Valdicava Rossos truly set a new standard for the genre.
The 2007 Valdicava Brunello di Montalcino could be called just one more in a string of excellent wines produced here. However the best character of the 2007 vintage shines through here in a wine that is rich and floral with plenty of ripe structure. This will require less patience than the 2006 yet will still age well.
The 2006 Valdicava Brunello di Montalcino Riserva Madonna del Piano will simply be one of the most talked about wines of the year. This is perfection in wine. Please only buy this for your cellar. The appropriate time to enjoy this fully would be 2016 to, well, for thirty more years. There are fewer than 800 cases of this wine for the whole world and demand is going to be intense. While we, because of our relationship with Vincenzo, will get a fair share, we may have to allocate.
